Paper Tanks Battle. How I decide to create that Game.....

My kid play PS4. When I found that he has World Of Tanks which is free to download I decide to create board game where I could use a paper models of tanks in scale 1:72.

I am not saying...he is playing all the time. He played WoT in past on PC and really enjoy it. But now he has PS4 where he can play more. he do play Battlefield now... and he is not aggressive.. good boy!

Few pictures from that battle. Very first one. I tried to match rules with my son age. Clear and simple rules.
More difficult part was range for each canon. On beginning I uses wooden stick with some length per canon caliber, etc... Even now I am thinking about that rules.
The houses were made from paper.

First time we play and he was Russian....when he lost... He is always German after that small episode. Below picture just before the end...devastation... that's he call it...

He likes also plastic models and paper models which I do like more than plastic...as a hobby and we did in past game to play on floor with I WW airplanes (scale 1:50 and 1:144)....pretty cool. Still in box hide for future.

Because he was interested more in tanks...I decide to buy few of them 1:72 and 1:76 scale from Airfix ...build and play with some rules...you know..move that, shoot that pick card...tank destroyed...simple...and catch 30 minutes or more (depend how you "fight") of fun with boy. I don't like plastic. I like paper models. Almost free.

When I build few of them some day I was wondered how if you use them to play on table, instead of catching dust...

How I started... I found on WoT site link to paper models:

https://worldoftanks.ru/ru/media/10/

Or:

http://www.papercraftsquare.com/military-papercraft/page/65

Also I tried to search on Google websites with free paper models in scale 1:50 / 1:48, etc. which is easy to resize and covert.

WoT tanks are in scale 1:50 in pdf format so I had no problem to resize it and after printing, building I was able to create formation of Russian and German tanks from Battle of Kursk time. Which was my start point. Now I have much more tanks and still doing them...during business trips.

Pdf documents are in A4 format so to convert it I used 69% printing scale - and from now I have 1:72 paper model. I am using standard paper 80g up to 120g. Any paper parts such body, wheels, etc. I glue to 2mm cardboard so tanks are solid construction.  PDF files with tanks scale 1:35 must be printed 49%. Last stage of finishing is transparent lacquer to protect paper from humidity.

I used Conversion Chart

And from scale 1:50 I was able to print out A4 scale 1:72 paper models

Made from paper of course. Sample of file below. Source was World of Tanks site. Russian Site.

T-34 with 76 mm canon, paper, scale 1:72

Panzer IV with 75mm PAK scale 1:72

Tiger I with 88 mm canon

T-34/85 with 85 mm canon

T-34 captured by German Troops
Tiger I from Russian White Tiger Movie

Collection of German tanks. Captured German T-34, Two Panzer V Panther tanks and Tiger I.
All tanks are 1:72 scale.

Here are some pictures from each phase of building tanks. SU-85 tank

And... David against Goliath...In building phase. Paper of course.

There are more of course and I have now pretty big collection tanks, buildings, terrain for big table. So far I used paper village buildings in proper scale, few trees to have small forest and roads to have some real field.

And after few tests... Russian tanks with a lot of luck won that first battle with few damages...

View from the top...Two T-34 and one SU-152 damaged last German tanks. Game took 40 minute....and playing mechanism works fine.

Important note: I played myself to check how system works and it works fine even with one player. Son was on summer camp so I used his room.

On the very beginning I build paper building. When I did some research on Internet I found that you can build own building from polyurethane foam which is used to isolate walls in building. One block size one per one and half meter cost 5 USD. It is very cheap and easy to cut, form and glue. I did some buildings and want to do real roads for tanks. Amateur but for game purpose it looks good enough.

I am using pen to paint on foam which looks good after painting.

In September / October I am going to add to my game new tanks:

King Tiger II. I build two versions. Very heavy tanks so I need to build good roads for them. Found another variant of that tank and I am going to build it soon.

IS-2 and SU-100 to handle fight with King Tiger.

SU-152 and Ferdinand - not same type but in short distance SU-152 will show his power. Ferdinand will be have long distance shoots.

KW-1 tanks. Just to have strong armor....first has 76 mm canon - second...not sure I build 152 mm short distance canon with turret. Need to build another turret with 76 mm.

Not painted yet. Ruins. Still learning how to cut and form...

Slowly do paintings of walls....

To compare 1:72 scale I found old Sherman tank made from plastic and it match almost 100%. Small difference is that printers can't print 48.61% scale (when you have model in 1:35 scale)... so I used 49% and my tanks are 0.5% bigger than original 1:72 scale...sorry...fired me...

Since German troops have new King Tiger I am going to build more T-34/76 and Sherman with 76mm canon to gain some advantage over German troops.

And Sherman finished but T-34 still during assembling. So far German has more fire power. But Russian will get - mobility and...quantity...

In many cases we have to look thru tank canon to see...do we have clear shoot....or not... not this time... my enemy tank is hide behind that building.

Or find tough play when you have to fight in the town or village
Or feel how you can to survive under heavy fire where few tanks shoot to our tank

Last day my son took part of the game to his school for board game festival. And - he succeeded...

Also he started to build own buildings.
Right now - village house based on sample house. Small steps to point his interest to something different.

Of course - assembling was my part. But foam is perfect to build any construction.
Village buildings are pretty easy to build.
